Can Claude Generate Videos? Connect Claude Code to Seedance, Kling and Other Video Models with MCP (2026)

Whether Claude can generate videos depends on what kind of video you mean. Claude doesn't call video generation models, so it can't produce realistic footage like Seedance or Kling. But it can write the script and plan the shots, and once you connect it through MCP, Claude Code can call those video models for you and put the shots on a canvas.
This guide covers what Claude can and can't make, how MCP lets Claude drive a video model, how Higgsfield MCP authenticates and bills, how to connect DramaCanvas and cap spending, and how the different Claude clients compare.
Key points
- Claude doesn't make realistic video itself: the footage comes from the connected video model; Claude writes prompts, plans shots and calls tools.
- MCP is a connection, not free credits: generating through MCP still spends the platform's credits.
- Higgsfield MCP signs in with your account: it works in Claude.ai and Claude Desktop, but free generations and unlimited models only apply on its website, and its own guide says the connector has no built-in spending limit.
- DramaCanvas MCP uses an API key: it suits Claude Code, Codex and Cursor; each key can have a cumulative spending cap, which is unlimited until you set one.
- Calls are charged immediately: there's no per-call confirmation, so set the cap before letting Claude work.
What kind of video can Claude make, and what can't it?
"Making video with Claude" covers three very different routes:
| Route | What you get | Who makes the picture |
|---|---|---|
| Ask Claude to write animation code | Explainer, data and motion-graphics animation | Code renders it, not a video model |
| Ask Claude Code to write editing or render scripts | Your existing footage cut together, captions added in bulk | Footage you already have |
| Call a video model through MCP | Realistic or stylised shots: people, scenes, camera moves | Video models such as Seedance and Kling |
Anthropic is explicit about Claude's built-in animation feature: it uses code to make explanatory animations, doesn't use a video generation model and doesn't produce realistic footage of people. For short dramas or ads with real-looking shots, you need the third route.
How does MCP let Claude call a video model?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for an AI assistant to call external tools. Once connected, the flow looks like this:
You tell Claude Code what you want in plain language, such as "make a 15-second cat short with three shots".
Claude plans the shots, writes the prompts and calls the platform's tools through MCP, such as "create canvas" or "generate image or video".
The platform generates the footage with the model you chose and charges your account at that model's price.
The result stays on the platform, and Claude gives you the canvas link or the result.
So the cost and quality of MCP video depend on the platform you connect and the model you pick, not on Claude.
How does Higgsfield MCP work, and do free or unlimited credits apply?
"higgsfield mcp" is the most-searched term in this space. According to Higgsfield's help center and its October 2026 guide:
| Item | Higgsfield MCP |
|---|---|
| Server URL | https://mcp.higgsfield.ai/mcp |
| Authentication | Sign in with your Higgsfield account; no separate API key |
| Clients | Claude.ai and Claude Desktop connectors; Cursor; for Claude Code, Higgsfield recommends its CLI plus skills |
| Billing | Credits from your current plan at standard rates |
| Free generations, unlimited models | Only on higgsfield.ai; MCP and the CLI are charged as usual |
| Spending cap | Its guide says the connector has no built-in spending limit |
You may also find posts about "24-hour Unlimited MCP". That was a Higgsfield promotion in July 2026 that closed on July 31; it isn't the current rule. For Higgsfield's plan prices, see our Higgsfield pricing guide.
How do you connect Claude Code to video models on DramaCanvas?
DramaCanvas MCP authenticates with an API key at https://dramacanva.com/api/mcp (Streamable HTTP). Connecting Claude Code takes three steps:
Step 1: Create a key and set a spending cap. Open the DramaCanvas API keys page, create a key named for its purpose, such as "Claude Code", and pick a cap when you create it, such as 200 credits.
Under Scopes, tick “Create and edit canvases” and “Create and manage generation tasks”, or Claude won’t be able to create a canvas or submit a generation; you can also click “Select all MCP permissions”.
Step 2: Set the environment variable, then add the server. Keep the key in your local environment only, never in a prompt or a screenshot.
export DRAMACANVA_API_KEY="your-key"
claude mcp add --transport http dramacanva https://dramacanva.com/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $DRAMACANVA_API_KEY"On Windows, set the variable in PowerShell and replace $DRAMACANVA_API_KEY in the command with $env:DRAMACANVA_API_KEY.
Step 3: Restart Claude Code and ask it to use dramacanva. For example: "Use dramacanva to create a canvas, write a three-shot storyboard, then generate the first shot with Seedance 2.0 Mini."
The default connection exposes 22 everyday tools: creating canvases, writing storyboards, listing models, generating images and videos, checking tasks and getting canvas links. For advanced tools such as splitting scripts into episodes, the on-site agent and assembling clips into a film, reconnect with ?profile=expert added to the URL and grant the key the matching permissions; the full set is 83 tools.
How many credits does it use, and how do you avoid double charges?
MCP and the canvas use the same model catalog and pricing rules, so the same model with the same settings costs the same. For example, Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p costs 7 credits per second, so a 5-second shot is 35 credits. Go by what the "list models" tool returns and the quote shown on the canvas.
Rules worth remembering:
- Calls run immediately: as soon as Claude calls the generate tool, the task is submitted and charged. If you want to check the price first, have Claude list the models before deciding.
- The cap is cumulative per key, not monthly: a 200-credit cap means that key can spend 200 credits in total. A cap of 0 blocks all paid calls; leaving it empty means unlimited, which is the default for new keys.
- Rotating a key doesn't reset the cap: the new key inherits the old cap and the amount already spent.
- Retry with the same idempotency key: paid calls carry an idempotency key of 8 to 128 characters. If a call is interrupted, retry with the same key and the same parameters, and you won't be charged twice.
- Failed generations are refunded: regenerating because you don't like a result is a new task with its own charge.
How do Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Codex differ?
| Client | DramaCanvas MCP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Yes | Use the command above; recommended |
| Codex | Yes | codex mcp add dramacanva --url https://dramacanva.com/api/mcp --bearer-token-env-var DRAMACANVA_API_KEY |
| Cursor | Yes | One-click add from the MCP page, or paste the config JSON into Cursor |
| Claude.ai, Claude Desktop | Some accounts | Needs custom connectors with request-header authentication, which Anthropic has opened to only some organizations |
When adding a custom connector in Claude.ai or Claude Desktop, if your organization has the request-header option, choose no sign-in and set the header to Authorization: Bearer your-key (include "Bearer"). Accounts without that option can use Claude Code, Codex or Cursor for now.
Frequently asked questions
Can Claude generate videos on its own?
Claude doesn't call video generation models, so it can't produce realistic footage the way Seedance or Kling does. It can write scripts, break them into shots and write rendering code. Once connected through MCP, Claude Code can call an external video model for you, and the results are stored on that service.
Does generating video through MCP cost money?
Yes. MCP is only the connection; generations use the platform's credits. On DramaCanvas, MCP and the canvas share the same models and prices, and calls are charged immediately without a confirmation prompt, so set a spending cap on the key first.
Can Higgsfield MCP use free generations or unlimited models?
No. Higgsfield says free generations and unlimited models apply only on higgsfield.ai; generations through MCP, the CLI and other automation are charged credits as usual. The "24-hour Unlimited MCP" offer you may find online was a limited promotion in July 2026 and has ended.
Can Claude.ai connect to DramaCanvas MCP?
DramaCanvas MCP authenticates with an API key in a request header. Custom connectors that use request-header authentication are a beta Anthropic has opened only to some organizations, so most Claude.ai accounts can't connect this way yet. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor all work.
